Fay M. O'Connell

Fay M. OConnell, 91 of Sioux City passed away on Thursday August 9, 2007 at a Sioux City Hospital. Funeral services for Fay will be held Tuesday August 14, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with open casket visitation one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the church. Father Merlin Schrad will officiate. Burial will immediately follow after services in the St. Marys Catholic Church Cemetery in Alton, Iowa. Fay was born February 18, 1916 to Oliver and Lenove OConnell in Sioux City. He graduated from Central High School in Sioux City in 1934. He married Loretta Kettler on June 8, 1940 at St. Patricks Church in ONeil, Nebraska, Father Richard Parr officiated. He went to work for Midwestern Paper Co. in 1936 as a shipping clerk, then into the office and later in sales. He was a veteran of World War II, serving a 3 year hitch in the Air Force from 1943-1946. He was stationed in the Pacific on the islands of Oahu and Guam and in Japan as a Battalion Supply Sergeant. After the war, he returned to his old job at Midwestern in charge of the order desk. Shortly after, he was made salesman for the South Dakota Territory. He was appointed Manager of the Midwestern Paper Co. in 1966. He completed 41 years of service and retired January 1, 1978. Fay was a past member of the Sioux City Boat Club, Sioux City Country Club, Sioux City Chamber of Commerce, and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church serving as usher at the Saturday 4:30 mass. Fay was the past president of the Sioux City Business Leaders. Fay enjoyed dancing, golf, and bridge. He and his wife traveled extensively spending many winters in Sun City, Arizona. Fay was a man of principle and great integrity. He is survived his wife Loretta. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Gay OConnell Peterburs.
