George Kermit Nordstrom, 70, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at Casa De Paz Nursing and Rehab.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with Toby Tyler officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted. George was born Feb. 29, 1936, in Sioux City. He was adopted by Oscar and Freda (Schenzel) Nordstrom. He attended Bryant Elementary, North Middle School and graduated from Central High School in 1956. George served in the U.S. Army for two tours and spent time in Vietnam. He served from Dec. 3, 1956 until 1958 and then again from Aug. 1, 1960 until his discharge on Aug. 2, 1968.
He married Charlene Mary Cavenaugh on Oct. 5, 1962, in Maryland. She preceded him in death on April 6, 2005. George was a salesman for American Gear.
He belonged to the Christian Science Church. He loved model trains and had an extensive collection. He also coached baseball and football for the youth athletics.
Survivors include two sons, Oscar and his wife, Lisa of Sioux City and Eric and his wife, Sundae of Sharpsburg, Iowa; three grandchildren, Benjamin and Meghan Nordstrom of Sharpsburg and Liberty Nordstrom of Sioux City; his biological mother, Helen Matthiesen of Mansfield, Wash.; a sister, Geraldine Ofstead Brewster; two half sisters, Marilyn Mongeon and her husband, Joe and Sharon Tupling and her husband, Norman; a half brother, Gary Matthiesen; a stepbrother, Howard; a stepsister, Annabelle Wright and her husband, Jim; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; and his adoptive parents, Freda and Oscar.
