Floy M. Nicks

Floy M. Nicks, 80, of Sioux City, died Monday, May 1, 2006 in Sioux City. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 from 3-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. A prayer service will then begin at 7:00 p.m. also at the funeral home. A funeral service will be on Wednesday, May 3, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Reverend Bill Schug officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill, Iowa. Floy was born June 22, 1925, to Henry A. and Grace F. (Griswald) Powell, in Mapleton, Iowa. She grew up and attended school in Mapleton. After graduation, she moved to Sioux City, where she attended Sioux City Business College. She moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, where she worked at Earl May Garden Center. On March 31, 1946, she married Earl Nicks in Troy, Kan. The couple moved to Sioux City, then to Hinton, Iowa, where they remained. After Earl passed away, she began working at Hallmark Care Center, cooking for residents for 14 years, retiring in 1992.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at New Hope Wesleyan Church and the American Legion Post 477 in Hinton. She loved sewing, cooking and working in her garden. Her joy of being with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends was a true testament of how loving and caring she really was. She also was an avid fan of her beloved Chicago Cubs.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Keith and Barbara Nicks of Hinton, Iowa, James and Mary Nicks of South Sioux City, Robert and Mary Nicks of Owasso, Okla., Kathy and John Watson of Sioux City, Dale and Verna Nicks of Hinton and Julie and Jan McLeod of Bartlesville, Okla.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lorraine Powell of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl; a daughter-in-law, Suzanne Nicks; and a great-grandson, Joshua Van Dorn Jr.
