Edna L. Murphy, 97, of Sioux City, Iowa passed away on Monday, August 21, 2006 in Sioux City. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 28 at Elmwood Cemetery in Coin, Iowa with Reverend Carl Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City is in charge of the arrangements.
Edna was born June 14, 1909 in Page County, Iowa to Bert Charles and Mary Louise (Blessing) Murphy. She grew up on a farm southwest of Coin and attended Coin Consolidated Schools where she graduated in 1927. Edna then attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska Teachers College in 1931. She taught business classes in Coin High School from 1931-1935 and then taught in the Department of Education at East High School in Sioux City from 1935 until 1973.
Edna was the quintessential dedicated, caring teacher and wrote at her retirement, This has been a very interesting time to have lived, and especially for those of us engaged in the field of education. I treasure the memories of the experiences and friendships established with the students and community. Ednas nieces and nephews also treasure the memories they have of their dedicated, caring aunt who added so much to the family over the years.
Edna is survived by her nieces and nephews: Phyllis Murphy of Pittsburgh, PA; Donna Murphy of Scottsdale, AZ; Mervin Murphy of Vancouver, WA; Barbara Murphy of Clarinda, IA; Craig Murphy of the Snohomish, WA area; and sixteen grand nieces and nephews.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Mary Blessing Murphy of Coin, IA; her sister, Theda Murphy of Shenandoah, IA; her brothers, Dr. Richard Murphy of Snohomish, WA; Herbert Murphy of Des Moines, IA; and her niece, Elaine McCowen of Coin, IA.
