Solomon S. Murad

Solomon S. Murad, 91, of Sioux City, IA; passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2008, at a local hospital. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2008, from 3-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. The Trisagion service will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel (6200 Morningside Ave). The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 2008, at St. Thomas Orthodox Church. Celebrating clergy will be Father Paul Hodge, Father Thomas Begley and Father Sava Leida. Burial will follow at St. Thomas Orthodox Cemetery at Graceland Park Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Army.

Solomon was born on February 24, 1917 in Akron, Ohio to Shehaidy S. and Galley D. (Esse) Murad. The family moved to Sioux City when Solomon was a young boy. He attended Sioux City schools. Solomon was drafted into the United States Army on June 22, 1942. He served in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theater where he received 1 Service Stripe, 5 Overseas Service Bars, 2 Bronze Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Solomon was honorably discharged on December 22, 1945.

Solomon married Marian W. Hamel on June 29, 1957. Solomon and his brother George owned and operated Murad Brothers Excavating and Hauling for over 40 years.

Solomon was a very active member of St. Thomas Orthodox Church where he was an honorary lifetime member of the board. He helped maintain the church cemetery and he would also visit church members in their homes and in the hospital with his special friend Father Thomas Begley. Solomon and Marian were very active in ticket sales and food preparation for the St. Thomas Orthodox Church dinners. He was an avid fisherman which he enjoyed to do with his wife Marian, family and friends. Solomon loved to garden and especially grow tomatoes, Cusa (Syrian Squash) and Mitta (Syrian Cucumbers).

Solomon is survived by his wife Marian of Sioux City, IA; son, Rodney Murad and wife Denise of Sioux City, IA; 2 daughters, Dorine Murad Johnson and husband Steve of Sioux City, IA; and Anna Murad of Bellevue, NE, 4 grandchildren, Jonathan Murad and wife Heather and Michael Murad and fianc Brianna, twin granddaughters, Hannah and Lexie all of Sioux City and 1 great grandson, Jacob, 2 sisters, Jean and Delora, and many nieces and nephews.

Solomon was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Rose Johnson, a brother, George Murad.
