Charlotte E. Meier

Charlotte E. "Shorty" Meier, 85, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, at Sunrise Retirement Community following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave., with the Rev. Gerald Feierfeil of Church of the Nativity officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, with the family present 3 to 5 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Charlotte was born Nov. 14, 1921, in Randolph, Neb., the daughter of C.F. "Frank" and Esther (Christensen) Van Slyke. She grew up in Randolph and graduated from Randolph High School.

She married Laurence C. Meier on April 1, in Indian Gap, Pa. He died April 3, 1992 in Sioux City. After their marriage, the couple lived in Loveland, Colo. until 1948. They moved to Randolph, where she was a cook at Meier's Hilltop Cafe for 20 years. In 1969, they moved to Sioux City. She retired from Security National Bank in 1983. She had a longtime career as a cook.

She was of the Catholic faith. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1973 Auxiliary and the Red Hat Society at Sunrise Retirement Community. Her interests were embroidery, cribbage and word search puzzles. She really enjoyed her time with her family.

Survivors include six children, Connie and Roger Tufte of Watertown, S.D., Dennis and Chong Meier of Street, Md., Mary Nelson of Sioux City, Gary and Cheryl Meier of Orchard, Neb., Dwayne Meier of Las Vegas, Nev., and Rhonda and Brad Kobold of Salix, Iowa; 23 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters.
