Howard B. Mehlhaff, 74, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kevin Lee officiating. The body has been cremated. Private family graveside services will be at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Lovan officiating, at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Howard was born July 29, 1932, in Tripp, S.D., the son of Herbert and Annie (Engle) Mehlhaff. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He married Clarine D. Pullman in 1956, in Freeman, S.D. They celebrated their wedding anniversary in September. He had been a resident of Sioux City since 1957. He worked in auto service and the Charlie Miller Auto Body Shop for 23 years, retiring in 1994.
He was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church. He was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Abu Bekr Shrine. He was a past president of the Boys of 68. He also was a member of the Wrecking Crew and Landmark Lodge. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed tinkering with cars and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Clarine Mehlhaff of Sioux City; two sons, Mike (Lori) Mehlhaff of Sioux City and Kevin (Lynn) Mehlhaff of Louisville, Ky.; a daughter, Karen (Gene) Tobin of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; four sisters, Levella Kaufman of Freeman, S.D., Neoma Kaufman of Freeman, S.D., Elvera Friederich of Tripp, S.D., and Bertha Preheim of Marion, S.D.; his mother-in-law, Adina Pullman of Bridgewater, S.D.; and a brother-in-law, Larry (Velma) Pullman of Bridgewater, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard and Alvin; and an infant son.
Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandson, Jennifer, Jill, Joe, Ashley, Dalton, Austin. Justice, Madison, Kendra, Katie, McKenzie and Kaden.
