Sophia K. McGinnis, 92, of Sioux City died following a brief illness Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at her residence surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel Guenther officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Sophia was born Oct. 10, 1914, in Sioux City, the daughter of Michael and Angela Bulkavich. After the death of her parents, her adoptive parents, Joe and Kazimiera Madichoskas, raised her.
She married Walter C. McGinnis on June 18, 1933, at St. Casmir's Church in Sioux City. He died July 25, 1986, in Sioux City. She was a lifelong Sioux City resident. She worked in the Commerce Building for 20 years.
She was a longtime member of St. Casmir's Catholic Church and a current member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking and baking. She also taught and played the piano and the organ. Lawrence Welk and polkas were among her favorites. She was famous for the homemade Lithuanian raisin bread and her chili. In earlier years, she was known as an interpreter for the Lithuanian, Russian and Polish settlers.
Survivors include three children, Marcella and her husband, Dr. Robert Wyers of Akron, Ohio, Paul McGinnis of Twin Lakes, Wis., and Judy and her husband, Tom McInerney of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren, Andrew Wyers, Michael (Stephanie) Wyers, Annette (Scott) Lewis, Steven Wyers, Tracy (Harvey) Davis, Tina (David) Binns, Paula McGinnis, Jeanette (Mitch) Atkinson, Thomas McInerney, Shelly Slaubaugh, Michelle (Mark) Rosener, Matthew McInerney, Nicholas McInerney and Amanda McInerney; eight great-grandchildren; and three special friends, Rita Nepper, Lucy Orzechowski and Chris Smutzler.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her adoptive parents; her husband; and a son, Walter J. McGinnis.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Wyers, Michael Wyers, Steven Wyers, Thomas McInerney, Matthew McInerney, Nicholas McInerney, Amanda McInerney and Vincent McGinnis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hospice of Siouxland.
