Margaretha (Greta) Mauer, 90, of Sioux City died Monday, June 18, 2007 at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center.
A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation 1 hour prior at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Reverends Dan Anderson and Mark Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Greta was born on Monday, December 25, 1916 in Schau town, south of Battle Creek, Iowa. She was one of ten children of Jacob and Meta (Berndt) Schau. She grew up and received her education in Ida County.
She was married to Gilbert Johnson in 1934 and divorced in 1935. One daughter Delores Ann was born to them.
She married Henry J. Mauer on October 25, 1938 in Sioux City. They made their home in Arthur, Iowa, where daughters LaDonna Jean and Darlene Louise were born, Henry later adopted Delores.
They lived in Arthur until 1957, where they operated a business for 20 years. Later they moved to Ida Grove where Greta owned and operated the Ida Grove Caf until 1961 when she sold the caf and moved to Sioux City. She was employed at various restaurants in Sioux City as a cook and retired in 1980 after working at the Plaza Bowl for 18 years.
She was of the Methodist faith.
She entered Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab on Nov. 20, 2004 following a fall at home and breaking her hip. On Dec. 9, 2004 she had her right leg amputated.
Greta enjoyed a good meal (with emphasis on good) and also enjoyed flowers, animals and birds, reading the Sioux City Journal and keeping abreast on current events. She often remarked how she felt the war in Iraq was unnecessarily killing our young people, Her brother, Walter, who was 21 months older than her, was killed in W.W.II.
She is survived by daughters, Delores Carlson, LaDonna and husband Jim Bjordahl, and Darlene and husband Deryl Ellis, all of Sioux City; two grandsons, James W. Mauer and wife Cynthia and Laurance (Larry) Ellis, all of Sioux City; three granddaughters, Denise and husband Gary Schieffer of Columbus Junction, Iowa, Marilyn and husband Rod de Montigny of Helena, MT, and Christine and husband Jack Barkley of Sioux City, four great grandsons, Christopher J. (CJ) Rabe of Monroe, LA, DanielSchieffer of Columbus Junction, IA, Joshua Barkley and Tyler Barkley of Sioux City; six great granddaughters, Lori Schieffer of Cedar Rapids, IA, JaMaine Mauer and her fianc Daniel Gregg of Elk Point, SD, Jeanette Mauer, Judith Mauer, Amanda Barkley all of Sioux City, and Becky de Montigny of Helena, MT. And a great great granddaughter, Alexis Mauer-Gregg of Elk Point, SD. three sisters, Bertha Rehse of Battle Creek, IA, Rosa Haugsted and her husband Clarence of Ames, IA, and Eunice Neppen of Ida Grove, IA. A brother, Raymond Schau and his wife Margaret of Storm Lake, IA and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Henry, four brothers, Edward in infancy, Walter in W.W.II, Henry and Antone (Tony), a sister Margie Konradi, a son-in-law, Marvin Rabe and a granddaughter, Cindy Rabe Easterling.
