Constance Rebecca Mathieson

Mrs. Adolph A. (Constance) Mathieson, 87, of Sioux City entered into eternal life on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital, surrounded by her family.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Calvary Episcopal Church, with the Revs. Patricia Roberts, deacon and Ernest Caltvedt officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Constance Rebecca was born June 19, 1919, in Bristol, England, the daughter of Arthur John and Rebecca (Harris) Way.

She married John Clifford Callen in 1943 in England. As a war bride, she and her two-year-old daughter, Maxine, came to the U.S. in February of 1946 aboard the Queen Mary. She lived in Pennsylvania for a short time and then moved to Sioux City in 1946, to live with her sister, Hilda Henkel, who was also a war bride.

Constance worked at Johnson Biscuit, where she met Adolph Albert Mathieson. The couple were married on July 4, 1947, in Dakota City. She worked as a seamstress at Aalfs Manufacturing for 25 years. Adolph died on Aug. 20, 1980, in Sioux City. Constance retired from Aalfs in 1985.

She was a longtime, active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, then Calvary Episcopal Church. She was on the vestry and taught Sunday school. Connie was an avid reader and had a deep love of poetry. She also enjoyed being a seamstress and feeding wild birds, squirrels and deer. She had a tender heart for babies and children.

Survivors include six children, Ron (Mary) Mathieson, stepson, Maxine Brekke, Richard (Darla) Mathieson, Diane (Pat) Schwarte, Elizabeth Sturgeon and Rebecca Carrillo, all of Sioux City; a brother, Robert Way of Bristol, England; three sisters, Mary Starr of Keynsham, England, Frances (Robert) Seymour and Bridged (Stan) Uren, all of Bristol , England; grandchildren, Sam, Arne and Jim (Brenda) Mathieson, Britt (Kevin) Leitz of Coloma, Mich., Heather Brekke, Melissa (Bryon) Brausen of Minneapolis, Minn., Jon Mathieson of Melbourne, Fla., Adam Schwarte, Angela (Loren) Meiergerd, Amanda, Alison, Evan and Elise Sturgeon.; great-grandchildren, Echo Fischer, Victor and Aaron Carrillo, Alonzo, Felicity and Dimitri Brekke, Alex and Alyssa Schwarte, Jack Mathieson, Adriana Reed and Sammy LaFebvre, Krystal Anderson and Amber Leitz; and a great-great-grandson, Davion Anderson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Adolph; two brothers, Richard and Norman Way; three sisters, Hilda Henkel, Patricia, Silcox, Sylvia Carver; and a grandson, Dusty Mathieson.

Memorials may be made in her name to National Federation of the Blind.
