George S. Margeas, 53, died peacefully on November 5, 2009, at a local hospital with family members present.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 9, 2009 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church with Rev. George P. Pappas, Rev. Paul Hodge and Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, with a Trisaigon service at 6:30 p.m. all at the church. George was born May 31, 1956, to Steve and Virginia (Zahariades) Margeas. He was a lifelong resident of Sioux City and attended Hunt Elementary School, North Junior High School and North High School, graduating in 1975. He then attended Morningside College on a track scholarship, where he received a bachelors degree in 1980, and was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. In high school and college, he participated in track and still holds relay records at North High School.
George spent his whole life involved in the Coney Island family business and took over the Coney Island at Marketplace in 2002 until present.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Tyrian Lodge #508, Abu Bekr Shrine and the Sioux City Eagles Club. He was a proud sponsor of the Missouri River Bass Tournament each year.
George was an avid Nebraska fan and enjoyed spending time boating on the Missouri River and spending time with family and friends at Okoboji and Clear Lake. He is survived by his parents, Steve and Virginia Margeas of Sioux City; a son Beau Margeas, his fiancee and Beaus mother Michelle Booge of Phoenix, Arizona; a sister and brother-in-law, Maria and Roger Schultz, and nephews Zachary and Jordan Schultz, all of Sioux City; aunts and uncles, Dr. Aristotle and Kathryn Pappelis of Boca Raton, Florida; Bob Zack and Robin Hamilton of Phoenix, Arizona; Theodore and Niki Pappas of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Daisy Margeas of Sioux City; his godparents, Alex and Kiki Karras of Sioux City; several cousins, three godchildren and many, many friends.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, George and Paraskeve Margeas and Sam and Marika Zahariades; and two uncles, Nick Margeas and Gus Zahariades. Pallbearers will be John Baryo, Tom Fountoulakis, Dean Karras, Nick Kasotakis, Tim Konidas, Ray McAvoy and George Tsiobanos. Honorary pallbearers will be all of his cousins, godchildren and the Booge family.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Holy Trinity Iconography Project, 900 Sixth Street, Sioux City, Iowa 51101.
The family wishes to thank all of the intensive care and fifth floor medical staff at St. Lukes Medical Center for their loving care of George during his illness.
