Maynard H. Mammen

HINTON, Iowa -- Maynard H. Mammen, 70, of Hinton died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at a Slayton, Minn., hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, October 9, 2008 at First Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Alan Wicks officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Maynard was born Dec. 31, 1937, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of John C. and Lena (Ludwigs) Mammen. He attended school for 12 years. He served in the U.S. Army for two years.

He married Marlus Drake on May 28, 1960, at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Akron, Iowa. He worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone, which then became US West and later Qwest. He retired from Qwest in 2001.

He sat on the board of directors for Telco Triad Credit Union for 15 years. He was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Order of the Eagles. He loved to play cards and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Marlus of Hinton; a son, Kory Mammen of Florence, Colo.; a daughter, Kelli (Chris) Engel of Sioux City; a brother, Howard (Beverly) Mammen of Aurora, Ill.; two sisters, Janice (Ron) Burleigh of Lancaster, Calif., and LeJoyce (Norman) Jerde of Midway City, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Christopher Chester, Casey Chester, Christian Engel, Rachel Engel and Caleb Engel.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers will be Ronald Hoefling, Gerald Johnson, Dennis Barkley, Victor Renken, Dick Erickson, Kenneth Hillrichs, Steve Schoenherr and Elmer Brake.
