Leone A. Lane

Leone A. Lane, 97, of Sioux City passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at a local hospital, with her family at her side.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Dan Anderson of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. There will be a private interment in Logan Park Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com,

Leone was born on Oct. 3, 1909, in Spink, S.D., a daughter of Alfred E. and Ellen (Davidson) Johnson. She moved with her family from Spink to Sioux City in 1919 and graduated from Central High School.

She married Robert C. Lane on June 24, 1936, in Sioux City. Robert preceded her in death on Nov. 4, 2001, in Sioux City, thus ending their nightly 50 plus year-long Gin Rummy tournament, which Leone had led by over 650 points.

She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Sioux City, prior to its closing and had most recently attended Wesley United Methodist Church. She was an avid bridge player and had enjoyed walking, golf and traveling throughout her long and happy life. She was an avowed crossword puzzle enthusiast.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Randall Cook and his wife, Johnna of Alexandria, Va. and Kristen Cook Fruend and her husband, Todd of Branson, Mo.; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Fruend, Madison Fruend and Natalie Fruend; two sisters, Doris Wilson of Sumner, Iowa and Eunice Cox of McKinney, Texas; a son-in-law, Richard Cook and his wife, Jodie of Carlsbad, Calif.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry Lane Cook; two brothers, Glen Johnson and Robert C. Johnson; and a sister, Lois Kubler.

The family is particularly grateful for the superior care and compassion shown by the staff of St. Luke's Hospital and Hospice care in Sioux City. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
