Marie Lizabeth Kohl, 81, of Sioux City died early on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center -- Sioux City after a short illness.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1122 Jackson St. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, 822 Jennings St. Online condolences may be sent at www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Marie was born Nov. 27, 1925, in Clermont, Iowa, the daughter of Jens and Minnie (Osmundson) Nymann. She attended rural schools in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College Campus School in Cedar Falls in 1943. Marie earned her nursing diploma from Allen Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Waterloo, Iowa, in 1947, and became a registered nurse.
She worked as a nurse at Allen Memorial Hospital, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Satori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls and Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City.
Marie married Lou Kohl on March 2, 1948, in Cedar Falls. Several years after her son was born in 1956, Marie retired from nursing and devoted herself to her husband, son, hobbies and volunteer work.
She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening and playing golf.
At the time of her death, Marie had been an active member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church since 1956. Prior to suffering a stroke five years ago, Marie was active in church women's groups at Trinity and had served both as president of the Women of the ELCA at Trinity and on the Trinity congregation council.
As a volunteer at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center, Marie helped with blood pressure screening and worked in the hospital gift shop. Marie was very proud of her Danish and Lutheran heritage, her RN designation and her donation of 13 gallons of blood through the Siouxland Community Blood Bank.
Marie is survived by her husband, Lou Kohl; her son, Steven C. Kohl, a Sioux City attorney; a brother, Dr. James E. Nymann; and a number of nieces and nephew.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Jens and Minnie Nymann; her brothers, P.L. "Gus" Nymann and Dr. DeWayne S. Nymann; and her sister, Janet M. Butschy.
