Virgil L. King

SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Virgil L. King, 92, of South Sioux City passed away Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010, at a local hospital.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul United Methodist Church in South Sioux City with the Rev. Carol Jean Stapleton officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.

Virgil was the son of Earl L. and Emma (Martin) King born on Sept. 5, 1917, in Platte, S.D. He married Elaine (Harding) King on Feb. 16, 1942, in Platte. The couple moved to Geddes, S.D., where Virgil farmed until 1955. From 1955 to 1972, he worked for the Government ASCS, supervising the storage of grain until moving to South Sioux City in 1972.

Virgil loved to bowl and shoot pool, but his passion was playing cards. He was active at the Senior Citizen Center in his later years. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Virgil was a volunteer fireman while in Geddes, a member of the American Legion Post 307, and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He honorably served his country in the United States Army.

Virgil is survived by one son, Ron King and his fiancee, Pat of South Sioux City; three daughters, Pamella (Marvin) Glasser of Carson, Iowa, Judy (Ronald) Brooks of Atlanta, Ga., and Babette Fritz of Estherville, Iowa; two brothers, Harold King of Bullhead City, Ariz., and Earl King of Geddes, S.D.; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elaine; two brothers, Vern and Lawrence; two sisters, Helen and Lula; son-in-law, William Fritz; and one grandson, Jay.

Jerod Knowles will serve as an honorary pallbearer. Pallbearers for the service will be Anthony King, Koley King, Martin King, Todd Glasser, and Trevor Knowles.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the June E. Nylen Cancer Center.
