Dr. Aaron Louis Katz, 88, longtime Sioux City physician, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital, after a long illness.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Mount Carmel Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday at Congregation Beth Shalom, with Rabbi Guy Greene officiating. Dr. Katz was born Sept. 16, 1919, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Morris and Rivka Katz. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, Brooklyn College and Des Moines Still College of Osteopathy and Surgery in 1950. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 until 1945. Part of this time he was stationed in Sioux City and studied at Morningside College.
He married Anita M. Brenner on Feb. 17, 1944, in Scott Field, Ill. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1951. For 52 years, Dr. Katz was in solo practice (family practice and surgery) from his office on South Fairmount Street in Greenville. He treated three generations of many families.
He was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom, former president of Shaare Zion Synagogue and a member of B'nai B'rith. Dr. Katz was a member of the American Osteopathic Association and the Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association. He was a member of the 32nd degree of Masons. His hobbies and interests included carpentry, mosaic tile work, reading and listening to opera and classical music.
Survivors include his wife, Anita; a son, Dr. David J. Katz and his wife, Dr. Glynnis B. Ingall of Albuquerque, N.M.; two daughters, Naomi Katz of Los Angeles, Calif., and Ruth Whiddon and her husband, James of Edinburg, Texas; and four grandsons, Jonah Katz of Rockford, Ill., Ezra Katz of Aventura, Fla., Aryeh Katz of Los Angeles and Lydia Katz of Los Angeles.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and a sister.
Pallbearers will be his four grandsons, James Whiddon and Dr. Ronald Lorig. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Tom Benzoni, Dr. Noni Benzoni, Gordon Lebowich, Jan Lebowich, Ruth Lebowich, Bob Rehal, Bethany Gordon, Dr. Steve Gordon and Steve Palash.
