SIOUX CITY -- Geraldine L. Kalin, 90, of Sioux City passed away Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at Touchstone Living Center.
Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. today at Congregation Beth Shalom, with Rabbi Guy Greene officiating. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. today in Mount Sinai Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Geraldine was born July 8, 1920, in Bamberg, S.C., the daughter of Milton and Lillie (Polikoff) Shapiro. She grew up in Bamberg and graduated from Bamberg High School in 1935, with a membership in the National Honorary Beta Club for outstanding character and scholarship qualification. She went on to graduate from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor of science degree in business in 1941.
Geraldine served as president of the Sigma Delta Sorority. She was president of the Hypatian Literary Society and Kappa, Kappa, Kappa Social Sorority. She was treasurer of the Alpha Kappa Gamma Leadership Sorority and worked for the betterment of South Carolina. She was a member of the Damas and the debating council. She also served as vice president of the Girls Athletic Association at the University of South Carolina. She was a member of the May Court for three years and a member of the Chi Delta Phi National Honorary Literary Society.
After college, Geraldine worked in Columbia, S.C., during World War II for the war department. She married Sidney "Sid" Kalin on March 12, 1944, in Columbia. He died on March 29, 2009, in Sioux City.
She was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom. She had served as president of the Temple Sisterhood and Brandeis. She was a life member of Hadassah and had served as president. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed painting pictures for her friends and family. She was devoted wife to her loving husband Sid "Bud" for 65 years. She will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend.
Survivors include three children, Steven A. Kalin of Minneapolis, Janet K. Yulman and her husband, Richard of Coral Gables, Fla., and Bruce Kalin and his wife, Linda of Sioux City; nine grandchildren, Lindsay (Kalin) Holden, Jessica and Alana Kalin, Katy and Brett Yulman, Michael, Jenna, Jacqueline and James Kalin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sid; and her sister, Shirley Schwartzman.
