Dave L. Jones, 74, of Sioux City passed away following a lengthy illness Monday, June 19, 2006, surrounded by his family, at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center, where the caring staff became good friends with him in the short time that he was there.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Wesley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Merrill Muller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Dave was born April 3, 1932, in Hinton, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Ella (Richards) Jones. He was raised in Hinton and attended Hinton School until 1946, when the family moved to Sioux City. He then attended Woodrow Wilson Junior High School and Central High School.
He married Margaret Donahue on July 25, 1953, in Moville, Iowa. He lived most of his adult life in Sioux City, with the exception of three years in the Cherokee and Spencer, Iowa, areas. He was employed with Sioux Tools, Canteen Service Co., Cherokee Bottling and Omar Bakeries before entering the pest control business in 1962. He was employed with Arwell/Orkin Pest Control, Presto-X Pest Control and most recently his own business, Dave's Pest Control. He retired in 1990, due to ill health. He was also employed at the Community Action Agency for 12 years as weatherization director.
He was an eight-year veteran of the Iowa National Guard. He was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees. He was a member of the Leeds Community Club, serving as president and on various other committees. He was very active in the Boy Scout program for many years, serving as assistant Scout master, Cub master, then Scout master, where he led 10 Scouts through the rank of Eagle. He enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time with his children and grandchildren, especially the annual family outing at Lake Okoboji. Some of his fondest early memories were of Raymond and Jean Swanson of rural Hinton, who helped him grow up. He enjoyed going to coffee with the coffee group at Super Valu.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; a son and his wife, Ron and Sue of Sioux City; two daughters, Kathy Fyock and Diane and her husband, Mitch Rorris of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Rhiannon and Courtney Fyock, Jill, Josh and Jacob Jones and Brian and Megan Rorris; a great-granddaughter, Bella; a sister, Evelyn Woolworth of Sioux City; two brothers, Tom of Vancouver, Wash., and Larry and his wife, Trish of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Lowell, Pat, Gerald, Wayne and John; a sister, Theta Howell; and special friends, Raymond and Jean Swanson.
Pallbearers (all former Boy Scouts) will be Mark Musselman, Jeff Smith, Scott Smith, Bruce Hamel, Mark McCuddin and Tom Bish.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
