Dr. William L. Jackson, 75, of Sioux City died Sunday, March 23, 2008, surrounded by his family following an illness with Alzheimer's Disease.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Morningside Assembly of God Church, with his son the Rev. Bradley Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Dr. Jackson was born June 2, 1932, in Yankton, S.D., the son of Jennings B. and Grace K. (Cooney) Jackson. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Heelan High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He attended the University of South Dakota for one year.
He married Marienne Huffman on July 28, 1956, in Vermillion, S.D. She died Feb. 8, 1995 in Sioux City.
He graduated from the University of Iowa, then attended medical school at the University of Iowa. He came to Sioux City in 1966 and began his pediatric practice. He helped start the neonatal intensive care unit at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center. He retired from his medical practice in 1991. In 1977, he and his wife, Marienne, founded the Jackson Recovery Center. He retired from there in 2002.
He was a member of the Iowa Medical Society, the Woodbury County Medical Society, the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the Sertoma Club and the Abu Bekr Shrine Chanters. He was a friend of Bill W. and Jimmy K. He was a dreamer and a visionary.
Survivors include five children and spouses, Teresa and Guy Frank of Sioux City, Bradley and Debbie Jackson of Sioux City, Ellen and Gary Nichols of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Stuart Jackson of Sioux City and Jennifer Jackson and Gary Nusbaum of Westport, Conn.; a daughter-in-law, Priscilla Jackson of South Sioux City; his special friend, Sandy Kuntz of Sioux City; and 13 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marienne; a brother, Dr. James Jackson; and a sister, Genevieve Jackson.
