Clara L. (O'Hern) Hummel, 91, of Sioux City passed away Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009 at Countryside Senior Living Facility in Sioux City.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel with Karl Luther officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the family present.
Clara was born Dec. 27, 1917, in Wagner, S.D., to William and Tina (Hutton) Kade. Following the death of her father, Clara and her mother relocated to Sioux City in 1932. She received her remaining education in the Sioux City Public Schools. On Oct. 27, 1934, Clara married Russell O'Hern; to this union three sons were born, Duke, Pat and Jim.
Clara worked as a waitress in numerous restaurants in Sioux City before starting her career with Johnson Biscuit (later to become Interbake Foods) and was a member of the Bakers Union. Clara retired from Interbake Foods as floor supervisor in 1980, following 25 years of service.
Clara's husband Russ passed away in 1957, and she married Dwaine "Doc" Hummel on April 12, 1990 in Elk Point, S.D. Following Doc's death in 2002, Clara moved to the Four Season Countryside Estates, where she made many friends.
Clara enjoyed gardening, working in her years and loved animals. She had a wonderful sense of humor, teased people often, licked her fingers after eating her favorite Kentucky Fried Chicken at picnics, but always took the role as caregiver for those around her. She was a compassionate and giving person.
Survivors include her sons, Duke O'Hern and his wife, Caral of Sioux City and Jim O'Hern and his wife, Mary of Norwalk, Iowa; daughter-in-law Patty Harrison; grandchildren, Sandy Bunce and her husband, Rick, Bob O'Hern and his wife, Lori, Don O'Hern and his wife, Sherri, Robbie O'Hern and his wife, Connie, Tim O'Hern and his wife, Natalie and Beth O'Hern; granddaughter-in-law, Sally O'Hern; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Russ and Doc; son, Patrick William O'Hern in 1990; grandson, Scott O'Hern in 2006; three brothers; and four sisters.
