SIOUX CITY -- Audrey M. Howard, 92, of Sioux City died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at Touchstone Living Center.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Dan Lozer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7:15 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Audrey was born May 12, 1917, in Algona, Iowa, to Roy and Verna (Hiserodt) Moulds. She lived in Algona and Des Moines, Iowa, before moving to Sioux City. She graduated from East High School.
Audrey married Charles C. Howard on Sept. 2, 1939, in Rock Rapids, Iowa. Charles died March 31, 2003, in Sioux City. Audrey was working at the telephone company in Sioux City at the time of her marriage to Charles. She was the first married woman to work at the Sioux City office. She continued to work there until Linda was born. She returned to work in 1949 at the T.S. Martin Department Store and then went back to work for Northwestern Bell Telephone in 1951. She worked there for 26 1/2 years mostly as a business service instructor.
Audrey enjoyed cooking and entertaining, and was featured in the Sioux City Journal for past entertainment events. She loved her granddaughter and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed keeping the friendships of the "Dingalings," a group of officers and wives of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Iowa, which she and her husband, Charles traveled extensively to keep in touch.
She was a member of Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ and was a life deacon. Audrey was a past president of the Toastmistress Club, Soroptomist Club and the Iowa BM Chapter of T.T.T. She was a 50-year member of the Rose Croix Chapter No. 400 Order of the Eastern Star. She was a past chairman of the dietary volunteers at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center, where she was also named "Volunteer of the Year" in 1987. She was also a member of the Telephone Company Speakers Bureau.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Peterson of Sioux City, and her daughter, Jane Allen and her husband, Robert Allen of Arrington, Tenn.; three great-grandchildren, Marne, Kelsey and Jon Allen; a son, Robert Howard of Sioux City, who passed away on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at his residence; a sister-in-law, Bernice Howard of Grand Marais, Minn.; and a niece, Karen Victorov.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Stephen; and a sister, Helen Jensen.
Pallbearers will be Charles Yates, Harold Barkley, Tom Eggleston, Ray Clause, Robert Allen and Jon Allen.
Memorials may be made in her name to Hospice of Siouxland or Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ.
