Claire Louise Horn

Claire L. Horn, 89, of Sioux City passed away on Monday, October 27, 2008, at Sunrise Retirement Community. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2008, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Father James Bruch officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her name.

Claire was born on May 1, 1919 in Sloan, Iowa to William G. and Goldina (Short) Phipps. She grew up in the Sloan area where she attended school until the family moved to Sioux City, where she attended Central High School.

Claire married Charles Horn in 1936; he passed away in 1992 after 56 years of marriage. The couple lived in Sioux City where she worked at Johnson Biscuit Co., West and Martin Hotels and later was assistant manager at Gay Lanes Bowling Alley night shift for 15 years.

Claire enjoyed bowling and had won many bowling awards and trophies. Claire and Charlie also loved to fish especially up in Minnesota and ended up retiring in Waubun, MN, on Big Elbow Lake where they built their retirement home. She also liked crossword puzzles and making numerous types of salads for the family.

Claire is survived by 2 daughters, Patricia Berger of Iowa City, IA, Jo Ann Phillips of Sioux City, IA, a son, James W. Horn of Sioux City, IA, a daughter-in-law, Simone Horn of Sioux City, IA, 15 grandchildren, and 34 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Charles Horn, a son, Patrick C. Horn, 4 sisters, Wilma Phipps, Florence Phipps, Edna Hedden, Frances McCain, a brother, George William Phipps, a granddaughter, Lynn Berger, a grandson, Mark Berger and a great grandson, Tyler Moen.
