Emery B. Hines, 79, of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2007 at his home with his family at his side. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 16, 2007 from 3-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2007 also at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Jerry Goodteacher officiating. Services will conclude at the funeral home. Burial of ashes will be at Winfred Cemetery in Winfred, South Dakota.
Emery was born on October 25, 1927 to Emery and Elsie (Geiberger) Hines. He attended and graduated from Madison High School in Madison; SD. Emery was on the 1947 All State Football Team and was the best fullback in S.D. Emery then attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD.
Emery married Dorothy Rish in 1947. Emery moved to Sioux City in 1954, where he worked for the railroad, Swift Packing House. When he was working at Niedam Packing that is where became AFL-CIO Union President. Also in 1954, he worked as a cargo recovery specialist for Joe Morten/Great West Casualty. He later married Marvene Goodteacher on March 3, 1955. Emery also owned and operated the Old Mainliner on old Fourth St. He moved the bar to Pearl St. where he had coffee every morning at 6:00 A.M. He was the last remaining survivor from the Old Fourth St. Gang.
Emery was a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church, where he served on the Board. He also served as Chairman of the Urban Renewal Committee. Emery and Marvene where also foster parents for many children throughout the years. And for 30 years he prepared the traditional turkey meal every Thanksgiving and Christmas for anyone who needed a warm meal. He had the warmest heart. He was a man who knew who he was.
Emery is survived by his children; Mikyl & Ann Hines of Parkersburg, WV: Todd & Denise Hines of Sioux City, IA: Bruce & Renee Hines of Sioux City, IA: Gail & Roman Soto-Hines of Riverdale, CA: Cora Ann Hernandez of Sioux City, IA: Elsie Grace Hines of Sioux City, IA: and Angela Godfrey of Sioux City, IA; 3 sisters, Evelyn Walsh of Freeport, IL: Mildred & Raymond McLuen of Perry, IA: Shirley Moore of Madison, SD: 6 brothers, Leslie Hines of Elcajon, CA: Ernest & Joan Hines of Hiawatha, IA: Richard Hines of Lincoln, NE: Charles & Rosemary Hines of Mason City, IA: Harold & Ardis Hines of St. Cloud, MN: and Wayne & Kathy Hines of Shorewood, MN. 32 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
