Margaret L. Hendrickson

"The Voice of Siouxland" Margaret Louise (Morgan) Hendrickson of Sioux City died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, at the blessed age of 92 at Hillcrest Living Center in Bellevue, Neb.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. John Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Greg Hanneman officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Margaret was born June 29, 1914, in Sioux City, to Lafayette and Martha (Krummel) Morgan. She was orphaned four years later and was raised by her paternal grandparents. After graduating from Central High School in 1932, she worked at Pelletiers Department Store until she married Carl on March 26, 1939, at First Baptist Church in Sioux City.

She was best known for her singing voice. A voice student under Olive Wheat Fleetwood, she became a noted and favorite soprano vocalist in the Siouxland area for more than 60 years. She was dubbed "the voice of Siouxland", performing live and on the radio with a variety of groups including the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra and Municipal Band, the Shrine Chanters, the Nordic Men's Chorus and the Sioux City Consistory Quartet. For 52 years, she sang as soprano soloist at St. Thomas Episcopal Church and at Mount Sinai Jewish Temple in Hebrew. She sang in many other languages including Norwegian, Italian and Latin. For 60 years, she sang for weddings, funerals and special events such as the Grandview Park Bandshell.

She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, P.E.O. Chapter DH, the Abu Bekr Shrine Auxiliary and the Shrine Wreckettes.

Survivors include two sons, Morgan (Sharron) Hendrickson of Papillion, Neb., and William (Nancy) Hendrickson of Excelsior, Minn.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl A. Hendrickson; and a brother, Charles O. Morgan.
