Eugene Norroy Helmers

August 7, 1910 — February 17, 2010

SIOUX CITY -- Eugene Norroy Helmers, 99, formerly of Sioux City, passed away Feb. 17, 2010.

Services were held Feb. 20 at Greydene Baptist Church, Canon City, Colo. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Arrangements under the direction of Adrian Comer Garden Chapel in Pueblo, Colo. Local arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.

Eugene was born on Aug. 7, 1910, in Rock Rapids. He married his first wife, Berniece Irene Van Buskirk on July 11, 1942. He cleared forest land in northern Minnesota and South Dakota for many years. Eugene then moved to Colorado in 1958, and worked as a rancher. He later operated a feedlot and feed store. Eugene married his second wife, Ruby Shade, on Jan. 14, 1978, and was married for 32 years.

He was a member of the Greydene Baptist Church in Canon City.

He is survived by his current wife of 32 years, Ruby Helmers; a sister, Laura (Helmers) Schroeder; daughter, Bonnie (Jerry) Gassman; grandchildren, Daron Walter, Sheila (Bruce) Leinen, and Lloyd Eugene Nicholes; great-grandchildren, Nicole, Brittany, Trent and Trevor; stepchildren, Darlene Whitlatch, Melvin (Linda) Shade, and Ron (Wanda) Shade; many stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Minnie Pearl (Weatherly) Helmers and Henry Hiram Helmers; a sister, Bernice (Helmers) Athens; first wife, Berniece Irene Helmers; daughter, Connie Nichols; son-in-law, Douglas Walter; and stepson-in-law, Al Whitlatch.
