Edward Elmer Helkenn Sr., 88 of Sioux City passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at Sunrise Retirement Community. Funeral services for Edward will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Father Gary Snyder officiating and visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Graceland Park Cemetery. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in charge of arrangements.
Edward was born on January 18, 1921 in Quimby, Iowa to William Edward and JoHanna (Vandebroek) Hollingshead. He graduated from Quimby High School. Edward served his country during World War II in the US Navy. He was married to Mary K. Henderson on February 14, 1941 in Sioux City. She preceded him in death in July 1992 in Sioux City.
Edward was a member of St. Michael Catholic. He loved sports and watching the San Diego Chargers, fishing and traveling. He was a friend of Bill W. for 46 years.
He is survived by his four children daughter Sherry (Marlon) Kutzler of Sloan; son Ed E. (Terri) Helkenn, Jr. of Winchester, OR; daughter Patti (David) Bauerly of Sioux City; and daughter Deborah (Louis) Jones of Detroit Lakes, MN; 6 granchildren Gary, Jenny, Max, Nate, Matt and Samantha. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
