JEFFERSON, S.D. -- C. Larry Heckert, 60, of Jefferson died Monday, July 3, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital due to primary amyloidosis.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Gregory Hanneman officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 6 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Larry was born Oct. 2, 1945, in Jacksonville, Fla., the son of Charles W. Heckert and Jo (Wagel) Curtis. He graduated from high school in Buckhorn, W.Va., and attended the National Business Training School in Omaha for two years for computer programming. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He married Carol Sager in 1967 in Elk Point, S.D. She passed away Dec. 5, 1997 in Sioux City. He married Evelyn Miller on July 1, 2000 in Sioux City.
He worked at First National Bank as a computer programmer. He served as a fireman for the city of Sioux City until his retirement in January 2000. He also had his own lawn mowing service business for many years.
He was a member of the Senior Center and the Elks Club. He loved visiting friends and family. He took great pride in his lawn. He was very athletic and enjoyed playing pool, racquetball and basketball. He also enjoyed lifting weights.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn J. Heckert of Jefferson; two sons, Chad (Sarah) Heckert of Salix, Iowa, and Clay Heckert of Sioux City; a daughter, Celeste (Kenneth) Bathurst of Sioux City; two stepsons, Jeffery G. Nielsen of Nebraska City, Neb., and Scott C. Nielsen of Omaha; five grandchildren, Calla and Holly Bathurst, Haylee, Hannah and Hunter Heckert; eight stepgrandchildren; two brothers, Darrel Heckert of Florida, and Mike (Melanie) Heckert of West Virginia; three sisters, Annette (Dick) LaPlant of Florida, Charlene (Norm) LeClair of Maine, and Lisa (Joe) Gaines of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol; and a great-aunt, Nellie Heckert.
Pallbearers will be Chad Heckert, Clay Heckert, Kenneth Bathurst, Jeffery Nielsen, Scott Nielsen, Randy McDermott and John Roach.
