Lorine "Pee Wee" Hayes, 84, of Sioux City died Thursday, May 29, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital following a two-year battle with cancer.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2008 at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Floyd E. Brown officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Pee Wee was born Oct. 3, 1923, in Palestine, Texas, the daughter of Fred and Virginia (Carter) Jackson. She graduated from the Dallas, Texas, school system.
She married the Rev. Ray Boston and they came to Sioux City in 1945. She later married Arthur R. Hayes on May 5, 1956. He died Aug. 26, 1997. She worked in the beauty shop at Younkers Department Store for more than 20 years. She had also worked for Bostwicks for a few years and at Toy National Bank for 10 years. She also sold Mary Kay Cosmetics.
She was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church for 63 years. She first came to Mount Zion as first lady/pastor's wife in May 1945 to September 1954. She served as choir director and was a member of the senior choir. She was active in the mission and was a member of the Willing Workers. She was on the committee for the 47th church anniversary celebration. She helped with the Annual Women's Day for many years. She was active in the district and state conventions. She was a faithful attendant of Bible study as well as a faithful attendant of church services. She was a member of the Mother's board and was always available to sing for programs and for funerals as needed. She enjoyed spending time with her family and all of her grandchildren.
She was a Silver Life member of the NAACP and was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Prince Hall Affiliate, Harmony Chapter 22. She was a past president of the Young Matrons Art Club.
Survivors include two sons, Richard E. Hayes of Sioux City and Terrance Hayes and his wife, Kate of Cranberry, N.J.; two daughters, Sharon Thompson of Los Angeles, Calif., and Dixie and her husband, James Taylor of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Harold Jackson and his significant other, Betty of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Anna Ruth Jackson of Dallas, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Marva; a sister, Erma Lee Naoh; a brother, Herman Jackson; and a great-grandson, Reginald Hayes.
Pallbearers will be DeLino Dear, Jordan Gentry, Roman Gentry, Laverne Hayes and Terrance Hayes Jr.
