John B. Hayes

August 29, 1923 — April 26, 2010

HUBBARD, Neb. -- John B. Hayes, 86, of Hubbard died Monday, April 26, 2010, at Regency Square Care Center in South Sioux City.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 30, 2010 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hubbard, with the Revs. David Liewer and Paul Albenesius officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Harty-McNally Post 175 of Jackson, Neb. Visitation with the family will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.

John was born Aug. 29, 1923, in Sioux City, the son of William and Camilla (Quinn) Hayes. He grew up in Hubbard and graduated from Hubbard High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was active in the European Theatre and served under General Patton. He was a lifelong resident of Hubbard and farmed in the Hubbard area all of his life.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the American Legion Harty-McNally Post 175.

Survivors include his nieces and nephews, Mary Crombie of South Sioux City, Joseph Hayes and his wife, Barb of Jackson, Neb., Ann Jacobson and her husband, Bob of Clinton, Okla., Mike Hayes and his wife, Sheila of Lincoln, Neb., Jeannie Cork and her husband, Dan of Owasso, Okla., and Bob Hayes and his wife, Kristie of Ponca, Neb.; several grandnieces and grandnephews; and a sister-in-law, Darlene Schlickbernd of Emerson, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George and Joseph Hayes; and a nephew, William Hayes.

Pallbearers will be Pat Hassler, Pete Eriksen, Randy Lussier, Dan Gatzemeyer, Kevin Heeney and Jerry Walsh. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Walsh, Ray Gormally, Joe McKivergan, Jim Beacom, Stan Utemark, Ed Tracy and Clare Galvin.

Memorials may be made in his name to St. Mary's Cemetery in Hubbard.
