Don C. Hatt, 84, of Salix, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, passed away peacefully Monday, June 26, 2006, at Embassy Nursing and Care Center in Sergeant Bluff.

Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday in Graceland Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Naval Reserve. Following cremation, visitation with the family present will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Don was born April 1, 1922, in Sioux City, the son of A.C. and Olive L. (Long) Hatt. He graduated from Central High School and attended Morningside College. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. Following the war, he was a U.S. Naval Reservist until full retirement.

He married Arla Mae Vigen on Oct. 6, 1950, in Sioux City. Arla preceded him in death on March 27, 1973, in Sioux City.

He was owner/operator of Hatt Construction for more than 30 years. Upon retiring from his business, he retired to his farm property near Salix, Iowa.

He loved the outdoors, repairing and restoring machinery. He especially enjoyed flying while with the Naval Reserve. He always had time for a good chat and a story. His constant companions were his dogs, Herka-Dog.

Survivors include a son, Jon Charles Hatt of Ames, Iowa; a daughter, Jane Laurie Toft of Salix; and three grandchildren, Christina Mae Henderson of Los Angeles, Calif., Daniel Charles Hatt and his wife, Kayla of Ankeny, Iowa, and Gregory Jon Hatt of Ames, Iowa.
