Donald Hatcher

SIOUX CITY -- Donald Hatcher of Midland, Mich., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Friday, April 24, 2009, in Michigan following a brief illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2009 at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Merrill Muller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Donald was born and raised on a farm in southeastern Iowa, on May 4, 1916, the son of Howard and Emma (Wymore) Hatcher.

He married Claire E. Peters in Des Moines on July 18, 1941. She preceded him in death on March 27, 1999. He married Joann Nelson on July 8, 2000. She preceded him in death in November 2008.

He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Starlight during World War II. He worked for Herman M. Brown Company in Des Moines and Sioux City from 1946 until his retirement in 1982. He and Claire moved to Midland, Mich., in 1995.

He was active in hospital volunteer work, church work, bowling, golf, gardening and loved watching sports on television.

He is survived by a sister, Doris McMains of Truth or Consequences, N.M.; a daughter and her husband, Carole and Roger Royther of Lake, Mich.; a son and his wife, David and Vasana Hatcher of Falls Church, Va.; a daughter and her husband, Cathy and Michael Tikkanen of Minnetonka, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Mark Thorpe of Keizer, Ore., Teri and her husband, Ralph Nisbet of Keizer, Don Thorpe of Denver, Colo., Greg Royther and his wife, Octavia of Denver, Christina Royther of Denver, Don Hatcher and Vanessa Hatcher, both of Falls Church; and a great-grandchild, Abigale Royther of Denver.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Crescent Park United Methodist Church in Sioux City.
