Earl Vincent Hanson, 82, of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2007 at his home with his family by his side. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2007 from 3-8 p.m. A rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. A vigil service will then begin at 7:00 p.m. all at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at Cathedral of The Epiphany with The Very Reverend Paul Louis-Arts celebrating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Earl was born on October 1, 1924 in Sioux City the son of Charles and Florence (Robinson) Hanson. He grew up in Sioux City and attended Blessed Sacrament grade school, then he graduated from Trinity High School in 1942.
He moved to Portland, OR to work in the shipyards, but returned to Sioux City to be drafted into the United States Army in March of 1943. He served in Company C, 775 Tank Battalion. Earl was honorably discharged on January 7, 1946.
Upon his return, he married Patricia Irene Ryan on April 19, 1947 in Luverne, MN.
Earl owned and operated C.F. Hanson & Son with his father for most of his life. He closed the business down after the State of Iowa purchased the property in 1990.
He was an active member of Cathedral of The Epiphany for many years. He always enjoyed cooking and baking for family and church functions. Earls children and grandchildren also loved the candy he would make for the holidays. He also enjoyed fishing with his brother and woodworking.
Earl is survived by his wife of 60 years Patricia of Sioux City, 6 children, Mark Hanson of Sioux City, IA, Carol Crayne and husband John of Brookfield, WI, Jane Marcovich and husband Alex of Sioux City, IA, Teresa Mahr and husband Dan of Topeka, KS, Lori Homan and husband Kevin of Chillichothe, MO, and David Hanson and wife DeAnn of Leawood, KS. A brother, Glen Hanson and wife Joan of Sioux City, IA, and a sister, Rita Kirkegaard and husband Milo of Hasting, NE, 16 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Lewis Hanson, grandson, Christopher Mahr, and a great grandson Devon Bynum.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Earl Hanson Memorial Fund.
