Catherine "Kay" Haller, 82, of Sioux City entered into her eternal home surrounded by her family Saturday, March 14, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Bruch officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Catherine Duryea was born Dec. 21, 1926, in Omaha, the daughter of Chester and Cleo (Cooper) Duryea. She was raised in Dawson, Neb. and Falls City, Neb. They moved to Sioux City in 1943. She graduated from Central High School in 1944. She was first cellist in her high school orchestra and also played for the Sioux City Symphony for a year. She was proud of playing in the symphony when they accompanied Isaac Stern, the violinist at the old Orpheum. After graduation, she worked at Northwestern Bell for five years.
On Jan. 25, 1947, she was united in marriage to Frank Haller Jr. in Sioux City. She stayed at home and raised their six children. After her children were all of school age, she worked at Palmer Candy Co. for 15 years.
One of her great joys was bowling in the women's I.P.S. bowling league. She also enjoyed bingo and cards, but most of all, she loved being with all of her family especially at backyard cookouts and holidays.
The couple were longtime members of St. Boniface Catholic Church. They both retired in 1986 and loved to travel. Frank passed away Oct. 28, 1993, in Sioux City.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Steve and Mary Haller of Sioux City, Debbie Sturzl of Lincoln, Neb., Barb and Steve Griffith of Kingsley, Iowa, Patty and Gary Walters of Sioux City, Cathy and Rob McClary of Sioux City and Carrie and Dave Knapp of Sergeant Bluff; 12 grandchildren, Mike (Amy) Haller, Matt (Sarah) Haller, Matthew Radtke, Dylan McClary, Aaron Walters, Adam Walters, Morgan Walters, Ryan Knapp, Jennifer Knapp, Matt Daniels, Drew (Joanne) Griffith and Meggan (Matt) McDonald; and seven great-grandchildren, Grant Haller, Kaleb, Damien, Kage, Tatin, Rylee and Carson; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Cheri and Tom Archer of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son-in-law, Bruce Sturzl; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Radtke.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
Memorials may be made in her name to St. Boniface Catholic Church or Hospice of Siouxland
