Lloyd O. Haefs, 87, of Sioux City, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at his home surrounded by his family. Private family services have been held. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
Lloyd was born on February 17, 1921 to Walter and Gladys (Larsen) Haefs in Sioux City, Iowa. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1939. He then attended one year at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Lloyd enlisted into the United States Army Air Corp. on March 26, 1942 in Des Moines, Iowa. He served in the European Theater and was shot down over Greece. He was awarded the Air Medal with 7 OLC (posthumously) until it was discovered that he was actually a P.O.W. he was also awarded a purple heart, EAME Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, and the W.W.II Victory Medal. Lloyd was honorably discharged on May 3, 1946 in San Antonio, Texas.
Upon his return to Sioux City, Lloyd began working at Iowa Public Service where he was a Gas Servicemen for 35 years retiring after 35 years of service.
Lloyd was a member of the American Legion, he enjoyed fishing, and hunting and watching baseball on T.V. Lloyd also played baseball for the Sioux City Cowboys which was a feeder team for the St. Louis Cardinals which he was also drafted by. He also enjoyed bowling on the I.P.S. Bowling League and loved to read and tell stories.
Lloyd is survived by his wife Winnelle Haefs of Sioux City, Iowa, 6 children, Doug Haefs and wife Robin, Cliff Haefs and wife Jill, Cathy Harsma and husband Mike, Steve Haefs, Phil Haefs and wife Bonnie, and Connie Haefs. 12 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren, 2 sisters, Bonnie McEveny and Eileen Haefs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and 1 son, Dave.
