SIOUX CITY -- Levern A. Glau, 86, of Sioux City died Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at a local nursing home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Marhc 16, 2010 at Faith Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Ralph Shorey officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Levern was born Sept. 22, 1923, in Sioux City, the son of George and Emma (Hines) Glau. He was raised on a farm in Perry Township in Plymouth County, just one mile north of Sioux City. Levern graduated from Central High School in Sioux City, where he took electronic and radio courses. He was self-taught in radio courses and built a crystal radio from books and later a ham radio from scratch.
Levern worked for KSCJ at their transmitter in Leeds for five years. Later, Levern went to work in the studio at WOI-TV in Ames, Iowa, where he worked for 25 years before retiring at the age of 62. He sold his home, bought a travel trailer and traveled extensively for 15 years. He then bought a house in Riverside, where he lived for 10 years before entering Bickford Cottage Memory Care.
He was a devoted member of Faith Lutheran Church.
Survivors include one sister, Delores Gloyer of Merrill, Iowa; one brother, George and his wife, Delores Glau of Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Ada Glau of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Darrell and Donald; and one nephew, Dennis.
