Ethel M. Fisher

Ethel M. Fisher, 91, os Sioux City, died Saturday, May 6, 2006 at her home in Sioux City. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 from 3-8 p.m. with the family present 6-8 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel a prayer service will then begin at 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2006 also at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Reverend James Bruch officiating. Burial will follow at Graceland Park Cemetery.

Ethel was born Dec. 22, 1914, to Earl and Emma (Eberthart) Hallett in Smithland, Iowa. She grew up in the Smithland and Sioux City area. She graduated from East High School with honors. She was a member of the National Honor Society.

She moved to Colorado, where she met her husband, Frank Alec Fisher. They were married on July 23, 1938, in Sioux City. She worked at T.S. Martin as a bookkeeper after her marriage. The couple later purchased the flower shop (Flowers by Fisher's) on Pierce Street in the late 1940s. They moved the flower shop where Sunset Nursery was located on Stone Park Blvd. in 1973. She was to Flowers by Fisher's like Mrs. B was to Nebraska Furniture Mart; she loved her job. She retired from the flower shop in December 2005 at the age of 91.

She was the first female director of Florist Transworld Delivery (FTD) and a member of the Quota Club in Sioux City. She loved nature and watching animals. She would often go for evening rides to watch for wild deer. She spoiled her cats and dogs. She was very proud of her grandchildren, Scott, a former University of Iowa football player, Christina is currently a Sioux City school teacher, Neal and Kyle are serving their country with military duty.

She also did volunteer book work for the Siouxland Senior Center. She was taking Tai Chi classes with her niece, Elaine Knudson, at the Siouxland Senior Center for the last couple of months.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Frank E. and Patty Fisher of Bronson, Iowa, and Joe N. and Linda Fisher of Sioux City; and four grandchildren, Scott Fisher and his wife, Karen and their children, Samantha and Victoria of Chicago, Ill., Christina and her husband, Mark Blivin of Sioux City, 1st Lt. Neal Fisher stationed in Iraq and Senior Airman Kyle Fisher stationed with the 185th Refueling Wing in Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank on Nov. 2, 1986; and two sisters, Vera Kvam Vik and Earline K. Carter.
