Elroy R. Fairbanks, 67 of Sioux City died Monday November 5, 2007 at his home in following an extended illness. Per Elroys wishes, his body was cremated and there will be a visitation with no body present on Thursday November 8, 2007 from 5-8 p.m. and family present from 6-8 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. There will be a memorial service on Friday November 9, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Deacon James Fenceroy of Mount Zion Baptist Church officiating. Elroy Robert Fairbanks was born on March 2, 1940 in Sioux City, Iowa to Robert Lee and Frances (Kersting) Fairbanks Dames. Elroy graduated from Central High School in 1958. After graduation he served his country in the U.S. Airforce. After returning home from the service Elroy began studying law enforcement classes and continued to study throughout his career of law enforcement. He was married to Jerri Thompson in South Sioux City, Nebraska on November 27, 1965. During his 20 year career with the Sioux City Police Department Elroy obtained Master Patrol Man on all three shifts. After his retirement in 1987 from the Sioux City Police Department, Elroy became an Investigator for the State Public Defenders Office for 20 years. During his working career Elroy also managed and did security for Rollerama for 30 years, he was the Vice Commodore for River Cade for 20 years, he spent 13 years working security at St. Vincent Hospital as well as working security when and where needed at numerous other places in Sioux City. He also volunteered as tournament director for the Floyd Tournament Youth Softball Slow Pitch. He also enjoyed umpiring the kids in the tournament and he was known to coach from behind the fence. Elroy was a member of the Sioux City Policemans Association and the National Defender Association. He will be greatly missed by all those whos lives he touched as a coach, law enforcement officer, friend, father, grandfather, and husband. Elroy is survived by his wife Jerri of Sioux City; son Joey Fairbanks of Sioux City; Randy (Tami) Fairbanks of Sioux City; daughter Dana (Mike) Mertens of Sergeant Bluff; daughter Jennifer Fairbanks of Sioux City; son Chad (Sarah) Fairbanks of Sioux City; Elroy and Jerri also raised two additional sons Kerry Boltz (special friend Nevitta Lowell) and Korry Boltz (special friend Kim Zortman) both of Sioux City; adopted granddaughters Amanda Fairbanks and Shayla Fairbanks both of Sioux City; and 12 grandchildren Sarah Boltz, Amber Myers, Chantilly Mertens, Jon Fairbanks, Kaysha Boltz, Michael Mertens, Tiana Boltz, Andrea Fairbanks, Kylie Zortman, Rylee Fairbanks, Kaelyn Fairbanks, and Tayden Fairbanks, and a great grandson Ashton Fairbanks. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Melvin Fairbanks. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or the June E. Nylen Cancer Center
