SIOUX CITY -- Associate District Judge John M. "Jack" Fachman (Ret.), 82, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, at Sunrise Retirement Community following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Church of The Nativity, with the Rev. Gerald Feierfeil officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., a vigil service at 7 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus chalice service, at Meyer Brothers MORNINGSIDE Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Jack was born June 14, 1927, in Sioux City, the son of Mark L. and Genevieve (Kleinschnitz) Fachman. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On Sept. 9, 1948, he married Maxine O. Westman. In 1950, he was awarded a jurisprudence degree from the University of South Dakota. He was admitted to the Iowa Bar on June 24, 1950. He practiced law in Sioux City for 10 years before being admitted to the bench. On June 1, 1960, he was sworn in as a municipal court judge and became an associate district judge on July 1, 1973. He served the residents of Woodbury County for more than 37 years. He retired on Sept. 21, 1987.

Jack was a member of the Church of the Nativity, the Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, the Iowa Bar Association and the Judge's Association. He was an avid golfer for many years. He enjoyed pheasant hunting when he was younger. He also enjoyed his grandchildren very much.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine; five children and their spouses, Rita and Rene Machado of Comayagua, Honduras, Alice and Gene Mollet of Jefferson, S.D., Mary Fachman Weiner and Gregory Weiner of Chandler, Ariz., Mark and Cynthia Fachman of McCook Lake, S.D., and David and Karen Fachman of Des Moines; a sister, Rita Burwell of Burnsville, Minn.; 12 grandchildren, Nicol Machado, Amy Machado, Michael Machado, Melissa Dawahare, Corri Mollet, Gina Mitchell, E.J. Mollet, Andrew Weiner, Roy Fachman, Sara Fachman, Holly Fachman and Nicklaus Fachman; and three great-grandchildren, Ethan, Karly and Jaxson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Marcia Serdinsky and Mary Frances Murphy.

Jack believed in helping others who could not help themselves. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to Crossroads Women and Children's Shelter, 1307 Court St., Hospice of Siouxland or the Church of the Nativity.
