Alice Lucille "Babe" Eckert, 86, of Sioux City died Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at Sunrise Retirement Community.

Alice was born Jan. 8, 1921, in rural Bronson, Iowa, to Bert and Jessie (Croxell) Mahin. She graduated from Correctionville (Iowa) High School in 1938 and received a normal teaching certificate. She taught in country schools near Correctionville, Iowa.
On June 22, 1942, she married William T. "Bill" Eckert in Santa Monica, Calif. He died Oct. 12, 1994, in Sioux City.
She loved children both young and old. The couple sponsored teenage sock hops during the 1950s and 1960s in Pierson, Iowa. She also taught night school dance lessons at the Pierson School. She loved cards and taught her grandchildren and great-grandchildren many games. She did not often cheat. She was the best and most fun grandmother.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, William T. and Jean Eckert Jr. of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Denis R. and Julianne Eckert of Elk Point, S.D.; five granddaughters and their husbands, Dawn and Denny Bain of Kingsley, Iowa, Heather and Curt Marx of Red Wing, Minn., Angela and Chad Teply of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Stacy and Mark Genereux of Council Bluffs and Jennifer and Douglas Barry of Red Oak, Iowa; six great-grandsons; and four great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant son, Ronnie; four brothers, Kenneth, Alvie, Gerald and Charles; and three sisters, Iona Schumacher, Helen Schumacher and Evelynne Robinson.
A memorial has been established in her name with Hospice of Siouxland in care of Denis R. Eckert, P.O. Box 727, Elk Point, S.D. 57025.
