Leonard W. Dunn, 66, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at his residence from injuries suffered in a tractor accident.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. A luncheon will immediately follow the graveside service at the parish center. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Leonard W. Dunn was born Dec. 27, 1942, in Berlin, N.D. He was a sheep shearer and a farmer on the vast lands of North Dakota, where he pursued his journey in life. His journey found him building roads across the state, where he met his future wife of 46 years.
He married Judy Jelinek of Pisek, N.D., on Aug. 5, 1963. They then moved to the town of Forbes, N.D., where his farming passion continued. In the year of 1970, they moved to Sioux City, where he worked in the local packing houses until 1975. He then once again followed his passion of farming. Raising popcorn, corn and soybeans as well as hogs and cattle until his death.
Leonard was a man who gave to his family and friends as much as he gave to the land.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Dunn of Sioux City; his mother-in-law, Aileen Jelinek of Pisek, N.D.; a daughter, Madonna and her husband, Monte Hansen of Hinton, Iowa; a son, Joe Dunn and his wife, Edie of Sioux City; a son, Brad Dunn of Sioux City; a daughter, Tricia Dunn of Los Angeles, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Erica and her husband, Billy Eason of Round Rock, Texas, Spencer and Breann Hansen of Hinton, Tara and Chanse Dunn of Sioux City and Tyler, Holly and Tallie Dunn of Sioux City; 13 brothers and sisters and their spouses; and dozens of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Travis; his mother, Ludwina (Geffre) Dunn; his father, Leo Dunn; his father-in-law, Alexander Jelinek; and his brother, Eloise "Smokey" Dunn.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Leonard's name.
