Bernice Dennison, 100, of Sioux City, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 from 3-8 p.m. with the family present from 5-8 p.m. A Scriptural Wake Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. A funeral mass will be held at 10:45 a.m. at Holy Spirit Retirement Home with Father Dennis Meinen celebrating. Burial will follow at St. Peter Cemetery in Jefferson, SD.
Bernice was born on October 18, 1907, in Salix, Iowa to Willis and Emma (Hoover) Galland. She grew up in Craig, Iowa and attended school there. Bernice then moved to Sioux City and lived here all of her adult life. She worked for Drs. Earl and Thompson for several years.
On September 16, 1937, she married William A. Dennison, a long time Sioux City police detective, at Immaculate Conception Church in Sioux City. The couple owned and operated Ye Old Tavern on West 7th St. for a number of years.
She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and a member of Carmel Guild.
Survivors include two daughters, Colleen Chaussee and husband John of Sioux City and Kathleen Klemme and husband Ron of Hawarden, IA, five grandchildren, John Klemme of Geneva, Switzerland, Sara Klemme of Paradise Valley, AZ, John W. Chaussee of Sioux City, Jane (Dan) Fitch of Omaha, NE, and Ellen Chaussee of West Des Moines, IA, 3 great grandchildren, Hayden and Caleb Rosenberg and Alexander Fitch.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband William in 1987, 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Holy Spirit for the loving care provided Bernice these last five years.
