Donnie D. Don Cook, 82 of Sioux City, IA passed away Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at a local hospital after a short illness.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. R. Paul Johnston officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday with the family present 5:00-7:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Donnie was born Oct. 30, 1928 in Ute, IA the son of William Franklin and Pearl (Phillips) Cook. He graduated from Hornick High School and Wayne State College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Don later received his Masters in Education. He began his teaching career in Pacific Junction, IA.
On June 7, 1958 he married JoAnn Helen Jensen in Omaha, NE. The couple lived in Omaha and for one year in Crofton, NE prior to moving to Sioux City in 1959. His teaching career continued at North Junior High School and he retired from Hoover Middle School. JoAnn passed away on June 1, 1992 in Sioux City. He later married Colleen (Trimble) Goodyear on Sept. 16, 1998 in Sioux City.
In earlier years he loved camping, fishing and golfing. He was an all around sports enthusiast and an avid Hawkeye fan. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandsons and their activities.
He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a member of the Retired Educators Association and the Scandinavian Society. Don was also a volunteer at St. Lukes Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife, Colleen Cook of Sioux City; a son, Steve Cook of Sioux City and a daughter and her husband, Leslie and Doug Walker of Moville, IA; 2 grandsons and their wives, Ben and Stephanie Walker of Sioux City and Joe and Shelly Walker of Le Mars, IA; a sister, Opal Hayden of Gridley, CA; Colleens son and his wife, Doug and Lisa Goodyear and their daughter, Ali of Los Altos Hills, CA; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, JoAnn, his parents, 2 brothers, Harley and Leonard and a sister, Carrie.
Pallbearers will be Doug Walker, Ben Walker, Joe Walker, Joe Parks, Bill Cook and Dick Cook.
Memorials may be made in his name to Trinity Lutheran Church or to St. Lukes Partners.
