Stanis R. Chicoine, 83, of Elk Point died Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, in Elk Point following a lengthy illness.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, October 10, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elk Point, with the Rev. David L. Roehrich officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 9, 2008 with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church.
Stanis was born Oct. 16, 1924, in Jefferson, S.D., the son of Richard F. and Fern (Butcher) Chicoine. He attended Pleasant Grove School in rural Elk Point and graduated from Elk Point High School in 1942. He attended South Dakota State University. He served his country with the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946.
He was married to Virginia Gill on June 18, 1947, in Jefferson, S.D. She preceded him in death in July 1970. He later married Marilyn Imig on Nov. 23, 1973, in Denver, Colo. He was the owner and operator of Chicoine Machine and Welding from the 1950s to the 1980s.
He was an avid reader, fisherman and cribbage player. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He served on the Elk Point city council from the 1970s to the 1980s.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Chicoine of Elk Point; nine children, Susan (Dr. Martin) Kiernan of Colorado Springs, Colo., Nancy (Dr. Barry Mozlin) Knott of Carlsbad, Calif., Patrick (Ann) Chicoine of Castlewood, S.D., Bill Chicoine of Elk Point, Mary (Michael) Johns of St. Charles, Mo., Anthony Chicoine of West Hollywood, Calif., Robin (Stephen) Trainor of Pasadena, Calif., Richard Chicoine of Port Clinton, Ohio, and Christie Chicoine of Philadelphia, Pa.; a brother, Richard N. (Loretta) Chicoine of Glendale, Calif.; two sisters, Donna Jane Dose of San Diego, Calif., and Patricia Dessel of Simi Valley, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a very special life long friend of 81 years, E.E. Rozell of Elk Point.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Gill Chicoine; his parents, Richard F. and Fern Chicoine; his father-in-law, William Gill; his father and mother-in-law, Erwin and Martha Imig; and a brother-in-law, Marlin Dessel.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Chicoine, Cory Chicoine, Dan Chicoine, Christopher Peterson, Sean Knott, Matt Johns, Kurt Dose and Jeff Johns. Honorary pallbearers will be E.E. Rozell, John McIntosh, Gill Trainor, Tyler Trainor, Phil Trainor, Brian Larson, Bill Curry and Mike Hansen.
