Ruth Lazinger Charnie

Ruth (Lazinger) Charnie, 95, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at Hospice of the Valley, Eckstein Center, Scottsdale.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Congregation Beth Shalom in Sioux City. Burial will be in Independent Farane Cemetery. Local arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Ruth Charnie was born Nov. 11, 1912, in Poland, the youngest daughter of Max and Bertha (Holdowsky) Lazinger. She and her family arrived in America, where they settled in Sioux City.

In 1937, she married Abe Joseph Charnie and had three daughters, Ilene, Aronita and Harriet. After Abe's death on Oct. 28, 1970, she continued to live in Sioux City, actively raising her two grandchildren. In 1980, she left her beloved Sioux City, but returned on many occasions to visit. She had been residing in Scottsdale, Ariz., for the past 27 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Harriet (Jordan) Tempchin of Silver Springs, Md.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her daughters, Ilene Hershman on April 11, 1983, and Aronita Engel on Oct. 18, 2004.

Memorials may be made in her name to Congregation Beth Shalom.
