Rev William G. Carter

The Rev. William G. Carter, 74, of Tucson, Ariz. died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.

Bill was born July 28, 1933, in Duluth, Minn., to Leonard and Susan (Bonneville) Carter. He graduated from Denfeld High School. He earned his bachelor of arts degree from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and his master's in Divinity from Wartburg Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa.

On June 3, 1956, he married his high school sweetheart, Janice Jeanne Reitan, in Duluth, at Christ Lutheran Church, where he was ordained.

His first pastoral assignment was the combined parishes of Zion Lutheran in Alta Vista, Iowa, and St. Johns in Boyd, Iowa, where he served for three years. He served Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville, Iowa, for three years and Bethlehem Lutheran church in Lost Nation, Iowa, for five years. He retired from the ministry after 10 years as pastor of Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa.

He was on the SIMPCO (Siouxland Interstate Metropolitan Planning Council) board of directors, where he served a term as president. He was invited to give the opening prayer at the Iowa Legislature. After his retirement from the ministry, he owned and operated a video store and was a security guard at Great West Casualty and Port Neal.

He is survived by his bride of 51 years, Janice; five daughters and their families, Suzette Curry and her sons, Josh (Anisha) Curry, Nicholas Curry and Andrew Curry, Suzanne (Mike) Nutt and her sons, Stefan Nutt and Seth Nutt, Suellen (Kirk) Irwin and her sons, Kevin (Wanita) Corn, Daniel Corn and David Corn, Suelinn (Dennis) Nelson and their children, Janelle Nelson and Brock Nelson and Suelana (Mike) Kinney and their sons, Malachy Kinney and Myles Kinney; a great-grandson, Carter Corn and another great-grandchild is expected this September; two sisters; and three brothers.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; two sisters; an infant son; an infant granddaughter; and a son-in-law.
