Rudolph L. Carlson, 93 of Sioux City, passed away on Friday, December 12, 2008, at a local nursing home. Private family services have been held. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
Rudy was born on December 1, 1915 in Sioux City to Andrew Gust and Julia (Mathson) Carlson. He was confirmed and baptized at Augustana Lutheran Church. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School in 1934. He began working for Bekins Van & Storage after school.
Rudy married Sally Hedlund on April 15, 1939 at First Lutheran Church. He entered the United States Army Air Force in 1941, where he served in the 1st Air Force Sea Rescue, stationed on the East Coast. Rudy was honorably discharged in 1944.
The couple returned to Sioux City where Rudy returned to Bekins Van & Storage. He worked there for 39 years before retiring in 1976.
Rudy loved working in his yard after retiring. He and Sally also enjoyed camping and traveling. Rudy was a member of First Lutheran Church.
Rudy is survived by his daughter, Joan Whitney of Sioux City, granddaughter, Kristine Hill and husband Jim and a grandson, Ryan Whitney, 3 great grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Collin Hill and Ryanna Whitney.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Sally on January 25, 2004, son Douglas Carlson, a grandson, Matthew Whitney, 2 brothers, Carl Carlson and Elmer Carlson, 2 sisters, Jennie Lindberg and Alyce Rockwell.
