James D. Campbell, 80, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at a local hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. today at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating. Burial will follow the service in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to meyerbroschapels.com.
Jim was born Oct. 20, 1929, in Dunlap, Iowa, to Elman P. and Charlotte M. (Kightlinger) Campbell. Jim's family moved to Sioux City when he was a small child, and he attended St. Joseph's School and Trinity High School.
On Oct. 23, 1948, Jim married his grade school sweetheart, Mary A. Schwarte, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sioux City. Jim worked for Galinsky Brothers Fruit Company as a truck driver from 1945 to its closing in 1961. He then went to work for Northern Propane in South Sioux City. Northern Propane was sold to Ferrell Gas Company in 1985, and he retired in 1991 as market manager.
Jim enjoyed camping, taking fishing trips with his family, planting flowers, watching western movies and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his son, Denis and his wife, Carol of South Sioux City; two grandsons, Kirk Campbell and his wife, Angie of South Sioux City, and Todd "T.J." Campbell and his wife, Jessi of South Sioux City; five great-granddaughters, Aspen, Autumn, Faith, Kara and Kirsten; one great-grandson, Andrew James; three brothers, Robert "Bob" of Sioux City, Malcom "Mack" and his wife, Mary Lou of Denver, Colo., and Jack and his wife, Gerre of Bloomfield, Neb.; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Campbell of South Sioux City, and Nancy and her husband, Tom Zimmerman of Denver, Colo.; four brothers-in-law, Norbert Heinen of San Jose, Calif., Bob Worden of Sioux City, Joe Schwarte of Sloan, Iowa, and Ron Schwarte of Sioux City; and his mother-in-law, Irene Schwarte of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 60 years; one sister, Shirley Worden; and two brothers, Richard and William Campbell.
Pallbearers will be Denis Campbell, Kirk Campbell, T.J. Campbell, Bobby Campbell, Jack Campbell and Duane Bair. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim's grandchildren and great-grandchild, Aspen, Autumn, Faith, Kara, Kirsten and Andrew.
