Marie S. Calligan

SIOUX CITY -- Marie S. Calligan, 91, of Sioux City passed away Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Dan Guenther officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave. Condolence may be sent online to meyerbroschapels.com.

Marie was born June 10, 1918, in Sioux City, the daughter of Louis and Emma (Buddi) Osipowicz. She grew up on Lafayette Street in an area called the South Bottoms and attended East High School. She started working when she was 15 at Armour Packing. She went on to work as a waitress at Joe Gantz Steakhouse and other restaurants in Sioux City.

She met her husband, Vincent Patrick Calligan of Rolfe, Iowa, and married him in Sioux City on Jan. 20, 1940. She, along with her husband, developed and owned Tastee Inn and Out, two well known local restaurants located on Gordon Drive and Court Street since 1955. Both Marie and her husband, Vincent, operated four restaurants and one laundry-mat during the course of their business careers.

All her life, she had a passion for cooking and would seek out every opportunity to cook for her family and friends. She was a strong and independent woman, living on her own up to the time of her death. She was a member of the National Restaurant Association. She enjoyed painting, needlepoint and quilting.

She is survived by two daughters, Jean Marie Calligan and her spouse, Dr. Ivan K. Salmons of Sioux City and Debra Lea Calligan of Portland, Ore.; a granddaughter, Joye Heather Cook Levy and her spouse, Scott C. Levy of Bangor, Maine; and grandson, Merrick Vincent Calligan of Portland, Ore.; two great-grandchildren, Ellie Violet Levy and Gabriel Vincent Levy, both of Bangor, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent Patrick Calligan who passed away on may 29, 1972; and a daughter, Patricia Ann Calligan on May 1, 1998. She was the last living sibling of four that included, Ann Osipowicz Malenosky of Sioux City, Johnny Osipowicz of Henderson, Nev., Edward Osipowicz of Correctionville, Iowa, and Loretta Osipowicz Christensen of Sioux City.
