Hazel Brunssen

April 10, 1916 — July 4, 2010

DAKOTA CITY, Neb. -- Hazel Brunssen, 94, of Dakota City passed away Sunday, July 4, 2010, at a local hospital.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Silvia Kennedy officiating. Visitation will be held Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be held at a later date.

Hazel was born the daughter of Sim and Emma (Cale) Gilson on April 10, 1916 in Sioux City. She married Frederick Brunssen on Aug. 8, 1936 in Laurel, Neb. He preceded her in death on April 11, 1974. She worked in the kitchen at Ingleside Nursing Home for several years and then at the Sioux City Country Club.

Hazel was a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church.

She is survived by five children, Darlene (Robert) Dorr of Hospers, Iowa, Sharon Brunssen of Correctionville, Iowa, Norma Brunssen of Sioux City, Dennis Brunssen of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Mary (Ed) McCamley of Boxelder, S.D.; a brother, Robert (Maxine) Gilson of Corydon, Iowa; a sister, Katherine Chase of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Karen Brunssen of Sioux City; 21 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; a special grandson, Tim Seibold of Gilbert, Ariz., whom she raised since he was an infant; special nieces Donalda McCuddin of Sioux City and Virginia Prestley of Ute, Iowa; and a special friend, Lillian Brinkerhoff.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frederick; one son, DeWayne; three brothers, John Gilson, Ray Gilson, and Charles "Bub" Gilson; three sisters, Irene Hansen, Mary "Tootsie" Gilson, and Tillie Copas.
