McCOOK LAKE, S.D. -- Melvin Brown, 92, of Jackson, Mo., formerly of McCook Lake, died Sunday, July 16, 2006, at the home of his daughter, Susan Harlan, following a brief illness.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City, with the Rev. Merrill Muller of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Private graveside services will be in Newcastle Cemetery, Newcastle, Neb. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Brown was born March 1, 1914, in Newcastle, Neb., the son of Eugene E. and Susan M. (Powell) Brown.
He married Lina J. (Lee) Julke on July 21, 1940, in West Point, Neb. The couple lived in Sioux City, where he was employed at Sioux City Motor Express for 30 years. Following his retirement, the couple resided in McCook Lake for several years. His wife preceded him in death on Feb. 13, 2001, in Sioux City.
He was a member of Elk Point County Club and the McCook Lake Isaac Walton League. The couple were members of the Crystal Rhythm Dance Club. Up to the age of 90, he still enjoyed several hobbies including hunting, fishing, golfing and bike riding. He was an avid Husker fan.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Larry and Carol Brown of Lincoln, Neb.; three daughters and their husbands, Lynda and Dave Cronkleton of Davenport, Iowa, Susan and Gary Harlan of Jackson, Mo., and Dee Anna and Jim Arnold of Webster City, Iowa; a brother and his wife, Bob and Vi Brown of Des Moines; a sister, Opal Marsh of Wayne, Neb.; a special cousin, Selma Breslin of Newcastle, Neb.; nine grandchildren, David Neri, Dawn Adams, Melissa Darby, Tige Dean, Zachary Dean, Josh Harlan, Jaime, Amanda and Kelsey Arnold; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
